In his book The Cross and the Switchblade, David Ray Wilkerson (May 19, 1931 – April 27, 2011) describes himself as a Christian preacher who is best known in the United States. As the creator of the addiction rehabilitation programme Teen Challenge and the nondenominational Times Square Church in New York City, he was a trailblazer in the fight against drug addiction. Wilkerson’s widely disseminated sermons, such as “A Call to Anguish,” are renowned for being forthright and honest in their condemnation of apostasy and serious in their encouragement of people to make the commitment to follow the teachings of Jesus. He highlighted Christian ideas such as God’s holiness and righteousness, God’s love for humanity, and, most importantly, Christian views of Jesus Christ, among others. As far as possible, Wilkerson avoided dividing Christians into separate categories based on their affiliation with a particular denomination. On April 27, 2011, Wilkerson was died in an automobile accident in the state of Texas.
