Kelly, James Edward, is a former American football quarterback who was born on February 14, 1960. He was a member of the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League (NFL) and the Houston Gamblers of the United States Football League (USFL). Kelly was the third quarterback selected in the 1983 NFL Draft, which featured six quarterbacks in the first round, including John Elway, who was selected first. Kelly coached one of the great NFL scoring juggernauts in the Buffalo Bills, using the “K-Gun” system, which is renowned for its no-huddle shotgun formations. From 1991 through 1994, Kelly led the Bills to four straight Super Bowl appearances, all of which they lost. In his first year of eligibility, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002. Kelly’s number, 12, is the only one that has ever been retired by the Buffalo Bills. Kelly was named to the Buffalo Bills 50th Season All-Time Team in 2009.
